Describe your personal, educational, and professional experiences and how they informed your decision to pursue a graduate degree.
After obtaining my bachelor’s degree I gained experience in the workforce. I worked with vulnerable populations such as at-risk youth and families as a case manager, volunteer coordinator, and information/referral specialist. I wanted to provide more services such as counseling services but was unable due to my degree that is why I pursued a MSW. I wanted to become a school social worker and that is why I obtained the PPSC in order to work at a school setting.
What challenges did you encounter along your educational trajectory? How did you overcome those challenges?
Balancing internship, school work, and a part-time job was difficult for me. I had to learn self care skills, time management skills, and advocating for myself. I learned from my supervisors and classmates ways to help me overcome these challenges.
What advice do you have for individuals who are interested in pursuing a graduate degree?
My advice is to apply right after obtaining a bachelor’s degree, don’t let fear stop you from applying. I took a break from school and wish I would have applied right after graduating. Seek advice from mentors, family members, and friends in the field. Attend informationals for the program.
What did you enjoy most about your graduate/professional program?
Completing two internships in the two year program. Interning with the elderly and school based setting with students.
